Each player has a handful of cards and a number of actions. A player may use cards to gain special movements, inhibit the movement of other players, or move cars out of way. The other thing players can do is strategically move their car. Either way, making it down the freeway is a hoot with flat tires, stalled cars, accidents, and of course the police.

It is up to you which aspect you will concentrate on, more or less, but you should not underestimate any of them while building your civilization. Victory is achieved by the player whose nation produces the most culture during the game. However, there are many ways to produce culture: through religion, literature or drama, by building wonders, by utilizing cultural persons etc. Considerable amount of culture can be gained even via wars or aggression. JE-232 Agricola
by staff, 2 hrs, 5 players, Game, Some gaming, Characters/Armies required
[Game place holder - if you wish to play/run this game, contact a Programming Coordinator] In Agricola, you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood, or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats? The game supports many levels of complexity, mainly through the use (or non-use) of two of its main types of cards, Minor Improvements and Occupations. In the beginner's version (called the Family Variant in the U.S. release), these cards are not used at all. For advanced play, the U.S. release includes three levels of both types of cards; Basic (E-deck), Interactive (I-deck), and Complex (K-deck), and the rulebook encourages players to experiment with the various decks and mixtures thereof. Aftermarket decks such as the Z-Deck and the L-Deck also exist. If desired, we will use the Farmers of the Moor Expansion.

JE-235 Kingsburg
by staff, 2 hrs, 6 players, Game, Newcomers, Characters/Armies required
The game takes place over five years, a total of 20 turns. In every year, there are 3 production seasons for collecting resources, building structures, and training troops. Every fourth turn is the winter, in which all the players must fight an invading army. Each player must face the invaders, so this is not a cooperative game. The resources to build structures and train troops are collected by influencing the advisers in the King's Council. Players place their influence dice on members of the Council. The player with the lowest influence dice sum will be the first one to choose where to spend his/her influence; this acts as a way of balancing poor dice rolling. Even with a very unlucky roll, a clever player can still come out from the Council with a good number of resources and/or soldiers. Each adviser on the King's Council will award different resources or allocate soldiers, victory points, and other advantages to the player who was able to influence him/her for the current turn. At the end of five years, the player who best developed his assigned territory and most pleased the King through the Council is the winner. Many alternate strategies are possible to win: will you go for the military way, disregarding economic and prestige buildings, or will you aim to complete the big Cathedral to please the King? Will you use the Merchant's Guild to gain more influence in the Council, or will you go for balanced development? Including Official Expansions

KW-282 Shogun
by Luther Harris, Gamemaster Series, 4.5 hrs, 4 players, Game, Kids, Characters/Armies provided
Shogun (later known as Samurai Swords) is one of the original Milton Bradley Gamemaster Series games, a sister to Axis & Allies. Up to five players start with three armies each and a number of randomly drawn provinces that generate income at the beginning of each turn and that change hands over the course of the game. Each army is led by an inexperienced Daimyo, whose experience level increases with each successful battle that the army engages in. The Daimyo's experience level determines how far that army can move each turn and how many battles that army can engage in. Income (koku) is used each turn to buy Samurai and Ashigaru warriors, hire Ronin or the Ninja, build fortifications, and/or determine the order of play. The winner of the game (the Shogun) is the player that captures a predetermined number of provinces. A real slug-fest of a game that is a lot of fun to play.

The wrinkle, however, is that the factory floor is filled with all kinds of inconvenient (if not down-right deadly) obstacles located in various locations: conveyor belts, crushers, flame-throwers, pushers, teleporters, oil slicks, pits, et cetera. But the real fun comes when the robots cross each other's path, and suddenly your perfect route is something less than that...

The combat system is intuitive, including all of the details that characterized warfare in the era of sword and shield. Various units may simply be swordsmen, while others may be archers or javelin throwers, horsemen, etc. The system includes rules for leaders, charges, melee, diversionary attacks, demoralization and more. A group of barbarians, for example, may be ordered to charge an enemy phalanx that had already hurled their javelins. As the barbarians near the phalanx, however, they may be ambushed by enemy ballistas hidden behind the ranks and waiting to disrupt just such a charge.

PE-246 P stands for PowerGrid
by staff, PowerGrid, 2 hrs, 6 players, Game, Some gaming, Characters/Armies required
Supply the most cities with power when someone's network gains a predetermined size. In this new edition, players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then bid against each other to purchase the power plants that they use to power their cities. However, as plants are purchased, newer, more efficient plants become available, so by merely purchasing, you're potentially allowing others access to superior equipment. Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials (coal, oil, garbage, and uranium) needed to power said plants (except for the 'renewable' windfarm/ solar plants, which require no fuel), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.
